How a Water Softener Works

A cation-exchange softener passes hard water through resin that holds sodium or potassium ions. Calcium and magnesium exchange onto the resin. When capacity is used, the control valve regenerates the resin with brine, then rinses it for another service cycle.

Service cycle

Hard water flows through the mineral tank. Resin captures calcium and magnesium, and treated water continues into the home.

Regeneration cycle

The valve backwashes the bed, draws brine through the resin and rinses away displaced hardness minerals. A demand-initiated control starts this based on measured use or remaining capacity.

What softening does not do

It does not automatically remove every contaminant, disinfect water or replace a drinking-water filter. Each additional concern needs its own evidence and treatment method.
